HMRC has published a brief message on gov.uk, informing taxpayers that a number of incorrect 2013/14 tax calculations (P800) and payable orders have been issued.
The problem affects tax calculations which were sent to tax payers for the 2013/14 tax year in the three week period from 15 September. It is still unclear as to why or how this has happened, however we believe HMRC are carrying out an internal investigation into this problem as a matter of urgency.
In the meantime, anyone who receives a P800 from HMRC are being advised to check this carefully themselves or pass it onto an Agent. You can agree the employment figures with those from your P60 and any previous employments from your P45. If you think the figures are wrong, do not bank any repayment or pay any outstanding tax. You can contact HMRC employee helpline to notify them of the error or wait a few days in case you hear from HMRC regarding the incorrect notice.
