The government is introducing a new fee structure for probate which will come into effect from 1 April 2019. In England and Wales, probate fees – the charge paid for administering someone’s estate after they die – will now be paid on a sliding scale depending on how much the estate is worth. Under the proposed new system, estates valued at more than £2m will now pay £6,000, while those worth between £1.6m and £2m will pay £5,000 and those between £1m and £1.6m £4,000. For estates worth less than £50,000, there will be no charge at all, which the Government has stated will lift around 25,000 estates annually out of fees altogether.
